The problem
Point Asia shipped its first two containers of e-bikes in 2006. Since then, e-bikes have drifted toward mopeds, marketed to retired couples, with the environmental idea reduced to a side note — and ordinary bike shops struggle to take on e-bike servicing. In Europe, most e-bikes sell for €2,500–4,000, and “too expensive” is the top reason people don’t buy (42%). The market lacked a product that keeps what is good about a bicycle.
What we did
- 01Four design principles: Easy (anyone can fit it), Essential (still a human-powered bicycle), Everyday (handles daily roads and commutes), Environmental (upgrading an existing bike beats buying a new one).
- 02Motor, battery and electronics integrated in an IPX4 splash-proof hub shell — no wiring; the only controls are a power switch, a battery indicator and a charging port.
- 03A gyro sensor reads flat, uphill and downhill; a Hall-effect sensor feeds back wheel speed; AI-assisted control adds the watts needed. The rider operates nothing.
- 04Specs: 200 W, 36 V brushless motor, 188 Wh battery, 50 km+ on flat roads, 3.5 kg hub, for 26″ and 700C wheels.
- 05Replace, don’t repair: shops swap in a new or refurbished unit based on the app’s diagnosis — no motor expertise needed to handle warranty.
- 06Minimum order quantities and pricing designed per channel — importers, wheel builders, regional distributors, bike shops, online and mass retail — at a suggested retail price of €499.
Where it stands
- Xinosys handled firmware, the app, and sales and marketing; motor, electronics and structure were developed with engineering partners in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
- Completed the product specification, pricing and channel model, and a plan to enter Europe through six countries: Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain and Poland.
